Types of Construction of Falls Heat Exchangers Unique feature of Falls Heat Exchangers - External Floating Head with Removable Tube Bundle.

Fixed Tubesheet Type

In this type of construction Tubesheets are welded to Shell. Hence gasketed joints are minimized, meaning thereby least maintenance.
However, Tube Bundle cannot be removed outside the body for cleaning or replacement. Moreover, thermal stresses may develop when large temperature differentials exist.

This type of construction is generally used for condensors.

Packed Floating Head Type with Removable Tube Bundle

This type of construction allows expansion of Tube Bundle to some extent with temperature changes. Also the Tube Bundle is removable for cleaning or replacement. However, the construction can be used only upto 10 kg/cm2 working pressure. Moreover, if packing ring fails during service, intermixing of shell & tube side fluids can occur.

This type of construction is generally used for After-Coolers.

External Floating Head Type with Removable Tube Bundle

This type of construction allows expansion of Tube Bundle with temperature changes & thus avoids thermal stresses. Tube Bundle can also be removed for cleaning or replacement. Unlike Packed Floating Head construction, in this type the shell & tube sides are separated by solid metal walls and as such no intermixing of shell & tube side fluids can occur due to possible failure of packing ring. The construction is more sturdy & can be used upto 40 kg/cm2. The maintenance is also very easy since all bolting is from outside only.

This type of construction is generally used for Oil Coolers and Water to Water Coolers.

U-tube Type with Removable Tube Bundle

In this type of construction Tube Bundle as well as individual tubes are free to expand. Also the Tube Bundle is removable. However, cleaning from inside of tubes is difficult. Moreover, individual tubes cannot be replaced.

This type of construction is generally used for Oil Heaters.
